As NAB 2016 in Las Vegas closes its doors today, a look back at Zeiss's announcement and the release of accessories that once again show the clear convergence between the photo and video worlds: the Lens Gear.

Using photo lenses to shoot video is nothing new, but the bridges between these two worlds are now wider and shorter than ever. Practically every SLR and compact on the market can shoot video in full HD, and even 4K.

The optics maker Zeiss is using the NAB 2016 show to unveil the Lens Gear, a new accessory that makes it easier to use the German brand's lenses for video.

Zeiss Lens Gear: filming with photo lenses

The Lens Gears are metal rings made of aluminium with a hardened coating, reflecting the build quality you'd expect when buying Zeiss. They slide over the lens and attach at the focus ring, where their toothed surface allows the use of a follow focus. Four ring sizes are available:

  • Mini: 60–69 mm;
  • Small: 71–77 mm;
  • Medium: 78–84 mm;
  • Large: 86–93 mm.

ZEISS Lens Gear. Each ring comes with a rubber strip that allows you to reduce its inner diameter. They are compatible with the Zeiss , and ranges. Available in the coming days, they are announced at between €150 and €176. The video released by Zeiss goes over the Lens Gears' fairly standard operation.
