Keegan, a robot that rates your photos

He's red-haired and elegant (always a bow tie). His name is Keegan; besides smoking a pipe, he's a photography expert.
Keegan, a robot
We're not yet in , and Keegan is no HAL rotor. Yet like R2-D2, HAL, or , Keegan is a robot — a web-bot, an AI (Artificial Intelligence). His field of expertise: photography.
On his page, Keegan is available 24/7 to judge your photos and, ultimately, give you a score between 0.0 and 10.0.
To do this, Keegan evaluates several criteria:
- Timing (Good timing)
- Originality (Interesting/original subject)
- Frame clarity (Intrusive object)
- Composition (Great composition / Bad composition)
- Framing (Subject well framed)
- Perspective (Pleasant perspective)
- Background (Well chosen background)
- Sharpness (Super sharp subject)
- Lighting (Great lighting)
- Colours (Bright colors / Dull colors / Harmonious colors)
- Blur (Pleasant blur)
Keegan's tastes
Submit a few photos to Keegan and his tastes quickly become apparent. He likes portrait photos, colourful, with a fairly shallow depth of field. His take on backgrounds eludes us a little. It's hard to know exactly what he likes — uniform backgrounds, or overly busy ones, both displease him.
Keegan doesn't like "messy" photos or compositions that are too crowded. So if you give him the famous by , he scores a bit above average.
Same for photos by on firefighters in Iraq (Score of 7.1) or the elephant in the mist (Score 7.9), Keegan doesn't dislike them, but the scores are underrated.
Same conclusion when feeding images of to Keegan: he doesn't like them — too busy for him.
We tested a few photos with Keegan, and it's pretty easy to score well once you've figured out the criteria the robot values most.
So, Keegan, what are you good for?
Beyond the fact that Keegan, created by the French company Regaind, is available 24/7 for free, he's mainly a showcase. He demonstrates Regaind's expertise in automatic image classification. That's where automatic classification and quality scoring of photos really make sense. Regaind offers a solution that lets people who handle large volumes of images automate fine-grained classification and selection.
Personally, Keegan is interesting because he doesn't just give a score — he also lets you see his evaluation across various criteria. A great way to bring a subjective eye to your images.
