Twelve years after its creation, Lytro announces its own end.

Over the past few weeks, announcements and rumours of announcements had been flying. Lytro was to be acquired by Google — a fine opportunity to back the growth of plenoptic technology. But that was before Lytro's press release simply announcing the end of its activities. Reading between the lines, though, one understands it's not the end for everyone. It seems some Lytro employees have already landed at Google. Perhaps a future area of development for Google — to be watched.

Plenoptic technology, learn more

A plenoptic camera is a digital camera that uses an array of micro-lenses to capture depth-of-light-field information — both the light intensity of a scene, as on a classic camera, and the direction of incoming light rays. Among other things, this allows focus to be adjusted in post-processing.
