Photokina 2018+

The next edition of Photokina, the major gathering of the photography industry, will take place, as planned, in 2018 — from 26/09/2018 to 29/09/2018. But that's not the only announcement…
The digital transformation of the imaging industry is progressing and opening new perspectives and value-creation potential. The new date and the annual cycle should, in the future, make Photokina even more attractive for all suppliers in the imaging ecosystem.
Rainer Führes, chairman of the board of the photography industry association (PIV)
Photokina, an annual event
So it's official: Photokina becomes an annual event starting in 2018. That's probably unsettling news for the Salon de la Photo, since both events — both aiming to attract photography announcements — are held in late autumn. Granted, the ecosystem's momentum is driven by new media (smartphones, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, etc.) and by the return of film, with announcements about papers, film rolls and new instant cameras. But will the photophile public be able to grow enough to commercially support the announcements and, with them, the sales outlook? Nothing is less certain. To optimise its commercial cycle, Photokina will run over 4 days (rather than 6 as in 2016). The tightening of the event likely echoes Yokohama's CP+, which also runs over 4 days (from 1/03/2018 to 4/03/2018).
