The prestigious Pulitzer Prizes, whose motto is "Honoring excellence in journalism and the arts since 1917," were awarded a few days ago. We've decided to bring you the images from two categories: breaking news photography and feature photography.

Breaking news photography

In the Breaking news photography category, two teams were honoured:

Mauricio Lima, Sergey Ponomarev, Tyler Hicks and Daniel Etter of The New York Times on one side; the photo team from Thomson Reuters on the other.

Both teams' work addresses the migrant issue in Europe with very harsh images that show us the unvarnished reality of the human tragedies unfolding every day on our doorstep. We've decided to include the 36 images of these two reportages below. Warning: the images are shocking.

Feature photography

In the Feature photography category, the prize went to the poignant reportage by Jessica Rinaldi. She photographed the intimacy of a child trying to rebuild himself after enduring a series of abuses by those close to him. Here too the images are shocking.

More about the Pulitzer Prize

The Pulitzer Prize is an American award given in various fields, ranging from journalism to music. In journalism, it is considered among the most prestigious in the world. Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the World newspaper, created the prize in 1904, but it was really established in 1917. Initially awarded in about a dozen journalism and arts categories, at the turn of the 21st century it is given in 21 categories, including several types of reporting, editorial writing, cartoons, photography, the novel, biography, drama, poetry, history and music. A $10,000 USD cash award accompanies the prize, which is presented in April to American recipients, while the Public Service winner receives a gold medal.
