Clément Chéroux : MoMA’s new chief curator for photography

On February 14, 2020, Clément Chéroux became the new chief curator of photography at MoMa in New York.

Since its reopening in October after four months of work and an investment of $ 450 million, the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) also offers a voluntary mixture of painting, sculpture, photography and video. To be part of a new dynamic, the museum has appointed a new chief curator for photography: the french Clément Chéroux, from the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (SFMoMA).

Clément Chéroux, 49, has been running the Pritzker Center for Photography at SFMoMA since 2017, the largest space dedicated to the photographic arts in the United States. At MoMA, he succeeds Quentin Bajac, a French compatriot, who returned to Paris at the end of 2018 to become director of the Jeu de Paume, the national museum of photography in France. (This is the second time that Clément Chéroux has succeeded Quentin Bajac as a curator; each has been in turn chief curator of the photography department of the Center Georges Pompidou.)

I decided to accept the offer because I think there’s a great new energy since the reopening. I was really impressed with the work that was done by the curators to show photography with painting, with sculpture, with films.
