DxO PhotoLab 6 is available

The french company DxO Labs just released a new version of its flagship product : DxO PhotoLab 6. This new version of the best RAW photo editing software gives technical and functional improvements.

DxO Labs is a french software publisher for photographers that stands out for its rigorous scientific approach and the implementation of interfaces designed for photographers. DxO Labs also publishes: PureRAW, ViewPoint, FilmPack and the Nik Collection.

DxO PhotoLab 6 : DeepPRIME XD

Two years ago, when DxO PhotoLab 4 was launched, DxO Labs revolutionized denoising by introducing the DeepPRIME algorithm. It is a neural network trained on millions of images analyzed in DxO’s laboratories. DeepPRIME denoises images at the demosaicing level, which makes a huge difference compared to denoising on JPGs.

DxO PhotoLab 6 : denoising with DeepPRIME

For this version 6, DxO PhotoLab is enriched with a fourth denoising mode: DeepPRIME XD.

XD stands for eXtra Detail. This new neural network is optimized for revealing details hidden in noise. On paper, you may be dubious, but click on the ad hoc button in the interface, and the result is simply magical.

DeepPRIME XD recovers detail, without adding noise.

It is a bit more computationally intensive but the difference with DeepPRIME is definitely worth it.

DxO PhotoLab 6 : ReTouch

With this version 6 of PhotoLab, DxO offers a new, or more exactly, a reinvention of its local retouching tool, now called: ReTouch.

ReTouch makes it possible to replace / duplicate areas of the image and, above all, to modify the size of the area considered and/or to flip it. It is a tool that can be used in most retouching operations to remove sensor’s spots, to correct an ankle hole or a crack in a real estate photo, remove an unsightly fold from clothes, remove tourists from vacation photos, etc.

DxO PhotoLab 6 : Colorimetry

This new version of PhotoLab comes with two essential changes in terms of color management. First, the PhotoLab engine uses a new working color space. DxO, faithful to its historic scientific approach, has developed its own color workspace; the DxO Wide Gamut. It is comparable to ProPhoto RGB but does not cover colors not perceptible to the human eye. Thanks to this color workspace, the PhotoLab engine is able to faithfully reproduce the colors of nature defined by the Pointer’s gamut.

An essential complement to this new color workspace, PhotoLab 6 has a soft proofing mode to control and adjust the colors of an image according to an output ICC profile.

EXIF and IPTC fields

The photo library module of DxoPhotoLab 6 is enriched with two EXIF fields (the serial number of the device and the version of the firmware of the device) as well as various IPTC fields. These additions make it possible to enrich the photos intended, for example, for image banks or for work with an agency.

Color labels

The color labels appear in this version 6, they are compatible with other software like Lightroom, Bridge or Photo Mecanic. They allow you to sort and search for images.

Hierarchy for projects

Finally, in addition to “projects” which allow you to virtually group images, PhotoLab 6 allows you to create groups of projects. It is possible to create a group within a group and thus constitute a virtual tree structure of images. The use of projects and groups is not mandatory. PhotoLab allows you to retouch an image by searching for it in the tree structure of local disks and network disks.

DxO PhotoLab 6: Miscellaneous

For other changes, note:

  • The inclusion in the ELITE edition of geometric correction tools from DxO ViewPoint;
  • The addition of rotation in the crop tool;
  • Native support for Apple Silicon architectures for Mac users;
  • Added new lenses and cameras.
